About

Furkating College library was started in 1981-in the year of establishment of the college. In the beginning it had a few books. Gradually, number of collection as well as services have been improved. Students, faculty and office staffs have membership in the college library. The objectives of the  college library are to ensure easy access to its resources. In order to cope up with the challenges of present days new procedures and technology have been deployed. To promote reading habits among the users the library committee has introduced the "Best Library User" prizes which are distributed on the occasion of college Foundation Day. The library also publishes “Granthagar”-a magazine with collection from students and faculty members. Library has over 18,047 books, Magazines, Journals, News Papers and E-collections etc. The library also uses SOUL 2.0 Software in library management and provides e-resources to users with the help of UGC-Info net and N-LIST of INFLIBNET. Considering the fact that majority of the users belong to economically poor families  the library takes extra care of them. The library also takes feedback from its users regularly.

Library Rules



Library Advisory Committee, Furkating College Central Library, Furkating College
As per direction of the DHE, Guwahati, Assam Furkating College library constituted Library Advisory Committee under the chairmanship of the principal. The librarian should be the convener of that committee sits twice in a year for discussing all-round development of the library. Taking into account increasing role on library, a Library Advisory Committee has been constituted as follows

                        : IQAC Co-coordinator
                        : All the Heads of the Departments

Aims, power & Function of the Committee:
Some of the important aims of the committee are as follows-

(a) To take decision on the policy matters relating to the management of the Library .The policy matters include finalization of Library annual budget, sub-allocation of the Library budget to different categories of expenditure like, books journals requested by each Department and for equipment and staff requirement, etc.
(b) To finalize working hours & days of the library.
(c) Books & Journals to be procured by the Librarian as per the recommendation of the respective sub-allocation
(d) To finalize on the Circulation Policy of the library.i.e.no of books of be issued to different categories of users, period of issue, fine charges for late return, whether journals to be issued, photocopy services to be provided and other related matters.
(e) To adopt policy for weeding out books, journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. and policy for writing off loses of Library documents due to theft, damage due to fire, water, rain etc.
(f) To ascertain staff requirements for the library.
(g) To take decision on the procurement of equipments & technology required for the improvement of library services.
(h) To discuss in detail on the growth of the library particularly space, cleanliness, furniture, toilet, Xerox, internet facilities etc. depending upon number of users.
(i) To discuss any other problem the librarian may confront in running daily activities of the library.
(j) The Library Advisory committee has the power, only to advice for execution of decisions taken in the meetings and review of the same.
(k) The purchasing of Books:
The Librarian will collect the Booklist from the all Department as well as list from vendors. After scrutinizing the list the librarian have to place the scrutinized list for prior approval with the Library advisory committee. After approval from the LAC Librarian can placed order for purchasing the same.
As per decision of the Library Advisory Committee & in consultation with the departments, the Librarian may place supply order to the college authority for books, journal and stores required by the Library.
(l) Quorum:
At least 2/3 (two third) members attending the meeting will be considered as “quorum”.
(m) Tenure:
The Library Advisory committee tenure will be 5 years. At least 2 meetings must be held in a year, gap between the two will be 6 months. However, if situations demands more meetings can be organized as per the advised of the President.
Library Membership
The library services are open to registered members. The following categories of persons are eligible to enroll as members of the library.

Book Loan
Only registered members are allowed to borrow books from the library. The following table provides borrowing privileges for various categories of members and collection.

Working Hours
The library is open six days a week (Monday to Friday)
It remains closed on all Sundays and Dibrugarh University Holidays
Lending services are available from 9AM to 4PM.


Code of Conduct in the library
*The reader’s ticket will be given for one academic year only and shall not be transferable.
*Loss or damage of the reader’s card must be reported immediately to the librarian. Duplication card may be issued after proper verification.
*Any misuse of the reader’s card may lead to cancellation of privilege enjoyed by the member.
*Readers should be carefully examining the books issued to them before leaving the library corner.
*Readers are required to maintain the order of the books on the shelves.
*Books must be returned within the stipulated period.
*Making noise, conversations and smoking are strictly prohibited inside the library.
*Students can inform any problem about the library to the notice of the librarian.
*Violation of any rules may lead to the cancellation of membership
The library rules may be amended or changed as and when necessary.

Library Resources

Print collection
The library has a total collection of about 18,000 printed volumes including books, text books and bound volumes f journals. Books are organized in open access shelves in various collections.



Text/Reference book collection
This is the largest collection of Text/Reference book for different courses in the library. These are issued to students.


Book Bank
Students can avail of book bank facility. Book bank facility is allowed for students of weaker sections. Books can be issued for one year.


Journals and Magazines
Different Journals are subscribed by the library. General magazines are also subscribed by the library. Library subscribes to several daily newspapers (English as well as Assamese).


Question Papers
Questions papers of past years are available in the library. User can make photocopy of relevant papers.
