Furkating College Organized an ICSSR, New Delhi sponsored National Seminar on “Ethnic Diversity of North East India and Indian Democracy” on 8th & 9th November 2019.

Furkating College organized an ICSSR, New Delhi sponsored National Seminar on “Ethnic Diversity of North East India and Indian Democracy on 8th & 9th November 2019. Prof. Munmun Majumdar, Dept. of Political Science, North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong delivered Keynote address and opened the Seminar. About 86 academicians, scholars, and researchers presented thought provoking and visionary research papers on different sub-themes (i) Traditions and customs of various ethnic tribes of North East India; (ii) Ethnic tribes and their space in Indian democratic set-up; (iii) Assimilation in the larger narrative of Indian Democracy; (iv)  Policy-making for overall development of tribes of North East India; (v) Ethnic relation in India; (vi) State and Ethnic Conflict; (vii) State and Civil Society; (viii) State, Market and Development; (ix) Ethnic Literature of North East India; (x) Ethnic Culture of North East India.                

    In deliberation of the Seminar it was found that the unique ethnic diversity of North East India is a resource for the Indian democracy. But the preservation of this unique culture is a big challenge. The every community has the right to get respect for their own cultural identity in all sphere of life. It can be advocated that the special constitutional safeguard for a limited period such as special economic zone, special cultural package, some short of rights in case of land reservation etc. should be given, so that the people of North East India can be moving forward with faster development along with the rest of India. At the same time dialogue, discussion, compromise as well as accommodation are the ways to resolve conflicts among ethnic groups.

    In the Seminar Prof. Munmun Majumdar of NEHU, Shillong Prof. Adil Ul Yasin (Retd.) of Dibrugarh University served as Resource Persons; Dr. Paresh Ch. Dutta (retd.) Associate Professor,D.R. College and Prof. Hemkanta Phukan (retd.) D.R. College served as Chair Persons at different technical sessions. At the very beginning Dr. Apurba Saikia, Principal of the College delivered welcome address and Joint Coordinator, Organizing Committee Dr. Debashis Baruah anchored the Inaugural function. Dr. Amulya Kr. Borah, Coordinator of the Seminar offered vote of thanks.
